A Rare Bird to Spot in Oahu

Posted on January 19, 2008 - Filed Under Travel |

If you like bird watching and you are planning a visit to Oahu, don’t miss the opportunity to see a very rare bird. An entry about an Oahu Elepaio sighting in your Hawaii Travel Blog would be very exciting.

The Oahu Elepaio is a small bird that only lives in the forests of Oahu. Elepaios used to be very common, but they are now endangered. Today less than an estimated 2,000 remain. The Oahu Elepaio was first listed as an endangered species in May of 2000.

The Oahu Elepaio is mainly chestnut brown in color and has a white breast and belly. Adults have a dark brown back and crown, and brown streaks on their upper breast. Oahu Elepaios also have white wing bars, tail tips, and a white rump.

The Oahu Elepaio population is threatened in several ways. Diseases such as avian pox and malaria transmitted by mosquitoes are a threat, as are mammals introduced to their habitat, including rats. The Oahu Elepaios’ habitat has also been compromised and reduced by human activity.

Bird watchers aren’t likely to see an Oahu Elepaio from their Oahu vacation rentals since they live in the forest, but you could see one if you take an eco-tour. You can find out more about Oahu eco-tours by checking online Oahu Vacation Information.
