Have Fun at a Hawaiian Luau

Posted on January 21, 2008 - Filed Under Travel |

Many people like to attend luaus during their Maui Vacations. These are fun parties that feature live entertainment and a variety of different foods served buffet-style.

If you are very lucky, you’ll be able to attend a traditional luau. If you are invited to a private luau, you will be treated to a more intimate party in the style of ancient luaus. It’s more likely you’ll attend a public or commercial luau. These are organized and held for visitors’ convenience near condominiums, resorts and Hawaiian Beach Rentals.

Whether you attend a private or a public luau, you will be greeted with a fresh flower lei. These are nothing at all like the plastic party favor leis. Real luau leis are wreaths of colorful, fragrant tropical flowers.

Luaus are most often held outdoors under tents that are festively decorated with palm fronds, ferns, ti leaves and tropical flowers. Refreshing, fruity tropical drinks are served, but a full bar is usually available. Luaus often feature a whole roasted pig, baked fish, poi, pineapples and other tropical fruits and fresh vegetable dishes.

The entertainment usually consists of hula dancing, traditional music and possibly fire-eater performances. Guests are often invited to participate in the entertainment. Detailing your personal experience hula dancing at a luau could easily be your most exciting Hawaii travel blog entry.
