Learn about Hawaiian History as well as Culture

Posted on January 23, 2008 - Filed Under Travel |

During your visit to Hawaii, you’ll probably learn a lot about Hawaiian culture and history. Learning about Hawaiian culture can be a lot of fun. Those staying in Maui condos will probably find themselves attending one or more luaus. Enjoying traditional Hawaiian foods and entertainment is a great way to appreciate Hawaiian culture.

Unfortunately, some of the history of Hawaii isn’t as fun to learn about, although it is all fascinating and inspirational. Yet it’s impossible to understand Hawaiian culture today without learning about all of Hawaii’s history.

It might seem hard for vacationers in their Hawaiian Beach Rentals to imagine, but native Hawaiians suffered a great deal as a result of Europeans’ arrival in the 18th century. A Hawaiian travel blog from the late 1700s would be very different from the ones visitors create today.

Native Hawaiian populations were devastated by infectious diseases introduced by the Europeans just as Native Americans on the continent of North America were. As European agricultural methods replaced traditional farming practices, widespread famine occurred. Experts estimate the native Hawaiian population was 300,000 at the time Europeans arrived. Today, there are less than 10,000 full-blooded native Hawaiians.
